When I first began carving wood nearly five decades ago, I made numerous vessels as an exercise, learning the way of tools and the nature of trees. As time passed, I went on to other things; but when our beloved century oak that had shaded the studio since we first put it up, succumbed to age and drought, I returned to the primal form of the vessel, as a means to redeem the substance of our fallen Friend. No vessel can contain love, or life; but perhaps no other form speaks of both so eloquently.
