My workspace is called Dawntree Studio after the ancient oak that sheltered the place when we first came upon it. Looking out of our bedroom window just before dawn, the outline of the old tree was the first thing visible against the lightening sky. Drought and disease claimed the oak a couple of summers ago, but the "Dawntree" is finding new life in the sculpture that emerges from the studio from time to time. The wood that was hidden in the dark heart of the tree for a hundred years is coming to light again, finding new form and unforeseen significance. As painter, Sam Gilliam says, "Art is in the re-runs."
